| Ratatat - LP3 |
|
Once known for atmospheric instrumental rock driven by live guitars and a drum machine, Ratatat switches things up for LP3. Recording in Old Soul Studios out in the Catskills they stumbled on a variety of keyboard instruments including a grand
piano, harpsichord, mellotron and Wurlitzer which they make full use of here. Filled with icey synth sounds and harpsichord, "Shiller" could be right off of the Marie Antoinette Soundtrack. As it plays on they bring in the guitar and the guiro until it seems you are being lead through a tunnel. Evan Mast and Mike Stroud have a way of packing each song to the brim. "Mumhatz Khan" includes bells and chimes over the guitar while “Mirando” uses video game blaster sounds alongside an Indian inspired beat. They also often throw in interesting little details to make up where others would use their voices. On “Falcon Jab” they pull out all the Peter Frampton stops using a vocoder and on “Flynn” it sounds like someone is rubbing their finger up and down over their lips to make that gargling noise over an island style beat. While no one expects an instrumental band to take the world by storm, they do seem to have the dance clubs covered. Shempi with its booming bass and mix of harpsichord and Wurlitzer will undoubtedly get people moving. With a light of a match "Gipsy Threat" seems to take you through a chase scene complete with galloping horses. For those who are skeptical that instrumental music can be entertaining, Ratatat might just make you believe. - Shannon Carlin
