Architecture in Helsinki - Like It Or Not

Architecture in Helsinki’s music has a quality that makes you want to bop around and eat some candy. On their 5-song EP they keep some of that sugary energy, but try a few new things on for size. The album begins (and ends) with two very different versions of “Like it or Not”. Version 2 is a dancey little number complete with a choir that sounds like they were taught by the Muppets. With its Bollywood feel The El Guincho Remix sounds nothing like the one you heard 4 songs back, but once the hook “My mom thinks she’s in love with you” comes in you begin to remember.

The 70s funk bass line, conga beat and semi-rap sequence by Kellie Sutherland on “Beef in a Box” makes it seem like something Morris Day and The Time would have been into. Cameron Bird is a mix between David Byrne and Edith Bunker on the synth heavy “Hold Music (Max Tundra Remix)”. The band finally adds some lyrics to the instrumental “One Heavy February” from their album Fingers Crossed. With the drum sequence right out of Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison” this version is a lot less cutesy and a lot more hip hop. Trying to stick to what made the other version so catchy, they keep the lyrics sparse with a deep manly voice counting down the months leading to Sutherland who lets out a distant scream to name check the bands (apparent) favorite month.
