With one quick listen it is easy to tell that Circular Sounds wasn't recorded like other albums. Known as a "home-recording craftsman", Kelley Stoltz takes a DIY approach to his music. On Stoltz's fourth release, each song seems like it could have come from another era, but the clever combination of influence and personal style make them original creations.
"Speak to the Girl" has a Grateful Dead feel, fusing rock and country. Even over a bevy of steady hand claps and a heavy guitar riff, it is Stoltz's vocal talents that take center stage. On many songs, Stoltz begins mellow and gradually leads you to something you wouldn't expect. He often ends with a multi-instrument jam session or whispered last lines. “Something More,†with a beginning reminiscent of "All the Young Dudes," becomes a mid-tempo number about lost love. The repetition of "There must be something more I could have done" is set to the harmony of harmonica, slide guitar, and piano.
