Multi-instrumentalist Stefan Nemeth is best known as a member of Radian ("a band with impressively original density and texture," according to Ben Ratliff of The New York Times), in which he plays synthesizers. But with Film, the Vienna-based musician and record label head (he co-founded Mosz Records in 2003) has struck out on his own and compiled thirty-four minutes of original, ambient weirdness previously intended as soundtrack music.
"Field," from his work for Lotte Schreiber's Domino, a film about reinforced concrete and its effect on architecture, was enhanced by Martin Brandlmayer's drumming, plus further guitar, synthesizer and percussion work from Nemeth. "Luukkaankangas," comprised of little more than a simple beat and electronic washes on top, comes from a film (Dariusz Krzeczek's Luukkaankangas) about highway traffic in Finland. "Via L4 Norte," from an unfinished film by Nemeth about utopian ideals in Brasilia, opens with the sounds of cars cruising down a road. Those sounds soon yield to tribal drums, and eerie guitar observations. Film includes no party anthems, per se, but on a cold dark night, when concrete and highways are all you can think about, this album will call to you.
