Girlz In The Hood is some kind of unabashed monthly extravaganza showcasing a slew of local female talent. It's dynamic and audacious. It screams “Death to the Spice Girls!” And best of all, it's curing cancer.

On March 1st, in the back of what I thought was some crappy auto shop, the whirlwind hit Brooklyn once again. Live bands, MCs, dancers and Djs, all rocked out in cahoots with the GO! For The Cure Tour to raise some cash for women's cancer. A tripped out room full of grrrl power and lesbian pride isn't my usual scene, but this was a hell of a lot of fun!

The show launched with a drag king dance off courtesy of the Switch N Play crew—funny, entertaining and somewhat reminiscent of those Six Flags commercials. You know, the weird looking guy who's got all the dance moves?

Kissy Kamikaze kicked in next, providing my much-needed punk rock fix for the night. They were ill‬—literally. But that didn't stop them from tearing shit up! You might have blurred memories of lead singer, Tibbie X, from a little band called The X-Possibles. Her new outfit is just as cool, because they hate douchebags! Plus, they had the whole room chanting “Fuck L.A.!”—my sentiments exactly.

KIN took over from there. This female MC duo, Nor and IQ, just came out jumping and the whole place followed suit. The bar started handing out free Sparks drinks too, so everybody was dangerously energized. KIN had a sick live band backing them up, and though it gets hazy, I could swear Rob Zombie was on guitar. We had a hip-hop mosh going on for this set. Apologies to anyone I elbowed. But next time, get outta the way!

By the time Shiragirl came on, the sound people must have been pretty drunk too. I couldn't hear a goddamn thing, but whatever they were doing on that stage, it was hot! Nobody booed them, that's for sure.

Special guests Theo and The Skyscrapers closed the night. Personally, I didn't care. I'd rather go back in time and see The Lunachicks (Theo's old punk band). Nobody seemed to share my conviction though. All in all, it was a good time for a good cause. One big two-step for women. One killer hangover for yours truly.
