Original Dreamgirl Mary Wilson

Wilson performed last June at Feinstein’s Cabaret in New York. She put together the show, Up Close, by herself, singing songs that covered a range of artists including Eric Clapton, Sting, Sergio Mendez, Joni Mitchell, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Joel and Norah Jones, as well as several Supremes hits as if they were brand new. She performed an emotional rendition of “I Am Changing” from Dreamgirls and dedicated it to Florence Ballard, another original Supreme who died in 1976 at the age of 32. Beyond Race wanted to get the real story and so spoke to Mary herself, who was sometimes funny, sometimes pensive and always gracious.
