Butoh is shrouded in seemingly strange movements that make the dancer appear distorted. Such confusion is what makes butoh such a distinguished art form. "You see a lot of ugly form, from the point of view of the generally ‘beautiful’ body,” says Yoko Shioya, artistic director of the Japan society. “Movements are considered awkward or twisted to a modern dance perspective. I recommend the audience have the same attitude that I have: forget about the butoh label and just watch. Place yourself in as neutral a position as possible and then take it as an art piece.
