In March of 2007, Calvin Weston (of John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, and James "Blood" Ulmer) assembled a new trio to perform at the sorely-missed Tonic in New York City. The group, featuring Weston on drums, Living Colour's Vernon Reid on guitar, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma on bass, took the stage without a stitch of rehearsal; by all accounts, the music was monstrous. The group hit again later that month (at the Tritone in Philadelphia) and, at Reid's urging, made their way into the studio by summer. The resulting Urban Mythology Volume One, credited to the Free Form Funky Freqs, was improvised "completely on the spot" at Fenix Studios on Staten Island.
