The Black & White Album is a diverse disc of hip-hop, rock and R&B sprinkled with sexual innuendo and Coppola’s distinct, zany sense of humor. The title of the album is both figurative and literal. On one hand, it’s a reminder not to look at things as black and white when there is so much gray in the world. But on the other hand, it’s a reference to the singer herself. The daughter of a black mother and a white father, Coppola has struggled with her racial identity over the years. “I honestly don’t see myself as black or white,” she explains. “And not being able to know what you are causes [an] identity crisis. I’m not crying about it. It is what it is. I love my parents [and] what they did. But it’s difficult.” Some of this dilemma is tackled in the punky track “Woke Up White,” which contains the classic line, “I know black folks real well, ‘cause I watch me some Dave Chappelle.”
